Two medicinal plants of traditional use in Paraguay were analyzed: Tapekue (Acanthospermum australe) and Ñandypa (Genipa americana L.). The analyzes consisted in the quantification of tota phenolic compounds (TPC) and total tannins (TT) through the FolinCiocalteu method and the determination of the antioxidant activity by means of the DPPH • radical capturing capacity of both plants. The TPC values in the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Ñandypa were 169.86 ± 29.97 and 369.10 ± 68.51 AGE mg / 100 g of dry leaf, respectively. Meanwhile for the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Tapekue ere 314.01 ± 39.26 and 1119.92 ± 73.15 AGE mg / 100 g of dry leaf, respectively.
The TT values in the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Ñandypa were 53.59 ± 39.92 and 149.78 ± 47.66 AGE mg / 100 g of dry leaf, respectively. For Tapekue, TTs were only quantifiable in the ethanolic extract with 525.48 ± 56.04 mg AGE / 100 g of dry leaf.
Anti-radical activities (DPPH) were higher for the Acanthospermum australe extracts, while the lowest activities were observed for the Genipa americana L.
