Sustainable management of organic waste produced by small producers in Desmochados, Ñeembucú, Paraguay

Abstract

The sustainability of organic solid waste management by small-scale producers was evaluated in the context of the San Antonio Company, Desmochados, Department of Ñeembucú. The study, with a mixed approach and a descriptive, cross-sectional design, focused on agricultural producers, using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires as data collection instruments. The results indicate that the majority of respondents are native to the area, with an average age of 47 years and an equitable gender composition. Regarding land use, livestock farming dominates, with animal manure being the main source of waste generated. Although producers separate waste, the most widespread management practices are direct spreading on the plot, with burning and burial occurring. In contrast, recovery techniques such as composting are applied by a minority, demonstrating a low adoption of sustainable methods. On the other hand, the main difficulties reported for more efficient management include a lack of time and technical knowledge, although soil improvement is recognized as a key benefit. However, the willingness to change and interest in learning and applying new management practices are significant.
